A Renaissance of Tools, Not a Replacement of Thought

The emergence of artificial intelligence in the literary and journalistic spheres is no exception. But to greet this development with fear rather than discernment is to repeat history’s most tired refrain: the new must be dangerous because it is unfamiliar.

Yet danger is rarely in the tool. The printing press, once maligned by church authorities for loosening their control over scripture, became the foundation of the Enlightenment. The radio, feared for its potential to incite war, also became the voice of resistance across occupied Europe. Each medium has always depended on its steward. And deception — the great fear projected onto AI — has always been the province of human minds, not silicon ones.

The Old Masters of Misinformation

Jonathan Swift — cited by a local community newspaper in a recent editorial — was not merely a satirist toying with an astrologer. He was a sophisticated manipulator of media, using pamphlets and pseudonyms to create what we might now call an 18th-century viral hoax. If Swift lived today, he would not shun artificial intelligence; he would almost certainly wield it with devastating precision.

Let us not forget that human journalists, too, have misled. Hearst’s yellow journalism helped incite the Spanish-American War. In the 1930s, Walter Duranty of The New York Times denied the existence of Stalin’s famine in Ukraine while on Moscow’s payroll. The author of a recent editorial would have us believe AI is the new threat to public understanding, but that is a comforting fiction. The truth is messier: human fallibility and bias are constants — whether using a pen or a processor.

AI and the Reader’s Responsibility

AI, unlike humans, does not possess intent. It does not scheme, deceive, or grandstand. It reflects the data it is trained on and the prompts it is given. As with any tool, responsibility lies with the wielder. George Orwell, no stranger to propaganda, wrote that “political language… is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable.” AI does not invent doublespeak; it inherits it.

The assumption that readers cannot discern AI-generated content from thoughtful reporting is itself condescending. The recent editorial in a local community newspaper presumes that residents must be protected from the possibility of AI-tainted commentary, as though we are incapable of applying critical thinking. The Fear of Disruption Is Not New

Radio was once accused of corrupting youth. These fears, often expressed through moral panic, rarely hold over time.

Now, a familiar pattern reemerges. A local community newspaper, long the steward of civic narratives, now finds itself threatened not by malice, but by efficiency, scale, and transparency. Unlike traditional editorial boards, AI systems can process municipal budgets, analyze voting records, and summarize council meetings in minutes — all without fatigue or political alliance. The real concern is not misinformation, but disintermediation. The gatekeepers fear being bypassed.

The Fallibility of the Familiar

To those who defend traditional journalism as the final arbiter of truth, a sobering reminder: trust is not static. It is earned continuously. The fact that AI must now earn our trust does not invalidate it as a contributor to civic discourse. It simply reminds us of the high bar we should hold for all communicators — whether carbon- or silicon-based.

Rather than scold readers, those in traditional media should engage them. Rather than suggest readers are passive recipients in need of protection from AI, it would be better to recognize them as citizens capable of critical thought, discernment, and judgment. Truth has always required scrutiny, and AI is just the latest participant in that ancient process.

Our New Responsibilities

In this new age, the burden lies not on the medium, but on the reader. AI can hallucinate, yes — but so can editors. The antidote is the same: cross-reference, question, verify. Whether reading AI-generated analysis or an editorial from a small-town paper, we must ask not who wrote it, but what supports it.

Just as the printing press democratized access to scripture, AI has the potential to democratize access to policy, to data, to civic insight. It will not replace reason or wisdom. It is simply a new voice in the agora — sometimes imperfect, often useful, and ultimately accountable to the discernment of its audience.

To reject it wholesale is not a defense of truth. It is a retreat from the complexity of modern citizenship.
